We undertake workshops, guest lectures in collaboration with architecture / engineering colleges. Chief aim behind these is to expose the students to hands-on construction work and the concepts of natural building. We engage with the students on the following topics:
1. Construction techniques - stone, brick, mud, lime
2. Roofing - Introduction to local timbers and their applications in designing hipped roofs
3. Knowing our natural resources - Connecting the raw materials used for construction with the local ecology and study of biodiversity of the region.
4. Finishes - Plasters and floorings in mud, lime, terracotta
5. Learning from the vernacular - study of local traditional architecture and its application in designing contemporary buildings
We do also undertake on site training of local masons on ongoing projects.
Understanding materials and resource catchments - so that we are prudent in our use!
Learning from the vernacular - documenting and analysing old and beautiful structures in villages
Understanding materials and natural additives used in mud and lime based construction
Preparation of mud mix for cob - mixing
An integral part of mixing - pugging the mud, and having fun while you work!
Understanding foundations and stone masonry techniques
Basics of construction - how to use tools and tapes while lining-out
Learning about brickwork - from setting out to corbelling!
Cob oven made in BRICK SOA - workshop designed such that students get a brief idea about every single component of a building - from foundation to roof, in multiple natural materials and techniques
Demonstrating how to make a brick arch
Making a brick arch and load testing!
Bamboo weave patterns
Brick masonry, arch and bamboo floor - all learnt through a brick and bamboo workshop with Academy of Architecture students!
Training masons on site and demonstrating how to make an arch
